Bill Petro – Motorcycle Racing Photography

Since the early 70's, fans of cars and motorcycles have been stimulated by the exciting action images of Bill Petro. His images have been published in numerous magazines, newspapers and corporate brochures in Canada and the US.

Bill was born and raised in Canada's Motor City, Windsor Ontario. In fact, he lived right across the street from Ford's test track with a banked mile oval, the greatest playground ever. Bitten by the photography bug as a teenager, Bill competed in and won high school photo contests. This prompted him to enroll in the Photography program at Connestoga College and after graduating he moved to Toronto to pursue a career as a product photographer.

Bill could often be seen riding backwards on a race bike to get his famous shots.

On the weekends Bill found himself at Motocross tracks cheering his brother on and honing his action photography skills. Branching out from motocross to motorcycle road racing and auto racing, it wasn't long before he became a regular name in the Mosport programs. Racing was in his blood and as a freelance motorsports photographer Bill covered local and international motorcycle races throughout eastern North America in the 70s and 80s. From the beginning, the editors of Cycle Canada saw something in Bill's work and not only published his race pictures but hired him to shoot many of their test bikes. Cycle Canada and the Toronto Star still publish Bill's work from time to time.

As the 90's came around, Bill's cameras shifted their focus to more commercial images for some of the Motorcycle companies, and eventually the auto industry. Motorcycle racing still remains the most exciting sport to photograph and whenever possible Bill will find himself at a racetrack with his cameras, no matter who or what is racing.

The selection of Black and White images on display at the 2010 Motorcycle SUPERSHOW hails from a mix of motorcycle races in the 1970's. Featured is the iconic cross up image of Jim Pomeroy from the 1972 Canadian 500cc Motocross GP and one of the early on-track shots of the top Mosport road racers while sitting backwards on an equally fast motorcycle.
