Local Racer earns a spot in Walton TransCan Canadian Grand National Championship Motocross RaceWalton, ONT Ryan Derry just made his dream come true. The 15 year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in Canada, the 17th annual Walton TransCan Amateur Motocross Grand National Championships in Walton Ontario. Ryan took on over 10,000 hopefuls from across Canada to earn one of just 840 qualifying positions."The Amateur Nationals at the Walton TransCan is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in," says Marketing Coordinator Mark Perrin. "A win at the Amateur Nationals can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career." Most of Canada's top professional motocrossers, including Colton Facciotti, Dusty Klatt, Tyler Medaglia, Simon Homans and Marco Dube have won Canadian Amateur National Championships at the Walton TransCan. The race is so prestigious that last year, teenage star, Ottawa, Ontario’s Jeremy Medaglia, was awarded a pro contract after the race. Ryan, an Honour Roll student at Thornhill Secondary School, has been riding since he was 4 years old. Sponsors such as Parker Bros Powersports, NGK Spark Plugs and the Motorcycle SUPERSHOW help pay his way to the races. He has won 40 races in the last 2 years, and competes nearly every weekend in the Provincial Motocross series. Ryan will make the journey to Walton Ontario along with his father Peter Derry who also is a racer. The race runs August 13th through August 17th. Ryan is just one of the over 10,000 who spent the last three months qualifying for the event. The top finishers in regional qualifiers earn a birth into the national championship race at the TransCan. Racers may enter a wide variety of classes, from minicycle classes for children as young as four, all the way up to a senior division for riders over 40. There are also classes for women, and classes for both 250F and 450F bikes. The track is built on a section of valleys and farming land in Walton, Ontario. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners and other obstacles designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers. Most riders attend the event with the help of their families. In fact, many groups consider the event their family's summer vacation. Besides races, the facility provides family-friendly area including a campground, social events tent, games and activities, live entertainment and various vendors and displays. | |
